Irish club cancels three races on revised calendar out of “moral responsibility”

Blarney Cycling Club has decided against promoting three open races that had been included in the revised Cycling Ireland calendar when it was published last week.

The season has
been extended and some races have been moved from their normal dates on the calendar
in a bid to extend the road season to the end of October.

However, having reviewed its position Blarney Cycling Club said it has decided against holding the races it was due to promote.

It said it did
not want to expose local people to what “has been happening over the
last few months” – a reference to Covid19.

The club had been due to promote the 3R Mobility Paracycling
Series & Cork County TT Championships on July 25th.

It was also due to host the Munster Road Race Championships
on August 30th as well as the Donal Crowley Memorial on September 27th.

The absence of those events, which are all significant
races, is a blow. However, every club promoting races must be comfortable with
its plans in the current climate.

“As a club we feel we have a moral responsibility to the
local communities that we organise these events in, which includes to prevent
exposing them to large groups of riders from all over Ireland with all that has
been happening over the last few months,” the club said in a statement.

“We apologise to everyone who was looking forward to these events this year but we will be back next year with what we hope will be the same line-up of events.”
