Irish champ Conroy takes career-best result in HSBC UK National Trophy

David Conroy is Irish national elite men's cyclocross champion and has now begun making a make on the scene in Britain

David Conroy, the Irish elite men's cyclocross champion, has taken the best result of his career at the HSBC UK|National Trophy.

The Scott-Eurocycles rider was 3rd in the combined elite-U23 race and was first of the U23 riders on a very muddy day out in Westmorland Showground, Cumbria.

Conroy has been gaining international cyclocross experience by racing in Continental Europe in recent years.

And while he has ridden very well many times, including claiming national titles, today's podium finish came in the second round of what is Britain's premier cyclocross series; a big result for the Irishman.

Neon Velo’s Ian Field started the race as favourite and
lived up to that billing; the six time series winner and series champion
claiming victory on the day.

Gosse van der Meer, a 24-year-old Dutch rider and former road pro with Canyon Continental team in the UK, took 2nd place.

Gosse van der Meer, a 24-year-old Dutch rider and former road pro with Canyon Continental team in the UK, took 2nd place.

In very muddy conditions, Fields pulled clear on the
second lap and took Van der Meer (Bombtrack Bicycles p/b Hunt Wheels).

Behind the eventual winner and runner-up left an intense
battled in their wake for 3rd place. It was waged between three fancied British
U23 riders and did not initially feature Ireland’s Conroy.

Cameron Mason (Trinity Racing), Toby Barnes (RST/Cycle
Division RT) and Callum Macleod (Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes) all fought hard in
pursuit of the two leaders.

However, Conroy picked them off one by one and
overpowered them to pull away for 3rd place and leading U23 on the day.

Mason pushed Conroy hardest for the final spot on the
main podium and the duo exchanged 3rd place a couple of times.

However, the Irishman hit the afterburners on the final
lap and put the matter to bed; a late crash unable to derail him.
