A teenager who is charged with a number of crimes over the death of a Deliveroo cyclist last year will go on trial at the Circuit Court.
That court, which hears cases on indictment, can impose
longer sentences than the Circuit Court if a person is convicted.
While the boy now facing the charges has appeared before
the Children’s Court, and did so again last week, that court will not hear his
trial.
The teenager, aged 16 years, is accused of a number of
offences related to the death of 28-year-old Thiago Cortes in Dublin’s north
inner city on the night of Monday, August 30th, last.
The fatal crash occurred at 10:30pm on North Wall Quay,
with Mr Cortes taken from the scene by ambulance to the Mater Hospital where he
died two days later.
The boy now before the courts is accused of dangerous driving causing the death of Mr Cortes, a Brazilian who worked as a food delivery cyclist for Deliveroo.
The teenager is also charged with driving without a
licence, driving without insurance, failing to remain at the scene to assist to
Mr Cortes, not keeping the car at the crash scene and failing to stop with the
intent of escaping liability.
The DPP has decided the case should be heard on
indictment, in the Circuit Court. Judge Treasa Kelly of the Children’s Court
has remanded the boy in continuing custody to appear in court again the week
after next.
