Irish-born Juul-Jensen signs new deal after decade at WorldTour level

Chris Juul-Jensen started his career with Sorrento CC in Ireland and has since carved out a long career in cycling's top flight

Chris Juul-Jensen, the Danish pro rider who was born in Ireland and brought up in Co Wicklow, has extended his contract with BikeExchange for another two years.

The 32-year-old has already been competing in the pro peloton for 14 years, spending 10 seasons at WorldTour level; four at Saxo-Tinkoff and six at Team BikeExchange, in its various guises.

The team has now announced Juul-Jensen has extended for another two years, which will being him up to the end of 2023 and 12 seasons in the top flight.

Born in Ireland to Danish parents who emigrated to Wicklow in the 1980s, he followed his father and brother into mountain biking with Sorrento CC. As a schoolboy he was good enough to get a place on the Irish ream to ride the Youth Olympics in Italy in 2005.

By the time he was 16-years-old he decided he would follow in his brother Thomas’s footsteps and go to Denmark for transition year. He gained a place in a sports school and developed to international level, declaring for Denmark in the process.

Juul-Jensen said signing for another two years with Team BikeExchange was an "obvious choice" for him at this stage of his career and given his experience with the team so far.

"I have spent six fantastic years with the team surrounded by many incredible colleagues," he said. "They are what I enjoy the most on this team and what motivates me every time I pin on a number.

"We win and lose together; we stick together always. This is what creates the passion and the hunger to go out and race hard. I can’t wait to go out and win races with the team next year."

The team's general manager, Brent Copeland, described Juul-Jensen as "a very intelligent rider who always helps the team in many different races and situations". He was also someone who was vital in delivering "constructive feedback".
