An Irish bike shop has come to the rescue of a doctor who had his bike stolen from outside the Cork hospital where he has been working during the Covid19 crisis.
The doctor, who has preferred not to use his name, was on a 13-hour shift on his fourteenth consecutive day working when his bike was stolen.
However, owner of the Giant Cork shop, Will Curtin, has come to the rescue; providing a new bike for the medic on hearing what had happened to him as he worked hard during the Covid19 crisis.
Curtin said a friend of his sent him a Twitter link which
revealed news of the theft and he decided to help out the doctor.
“When I read the story I made an offer
to help the guy out,” he told stickybottle.
“The following morning when the story broke on the Neil Prendeville Show I made an offer again. And from there we were put in touch with Red FM’s Jamie.
“I’ve given a good few bikes to athletes
during the past eight years but this one brought out a huge sense of community
and some positive news in hard times.
“We are genuinely appreciative of all
the messages of goodwill on social media since.”
News of the theft emerged earlier this week when Jamie O’Hara,
a friend of the doctor, Tweeted his disgust at what had happened.
“My friend has just finished his 14th day working in a
Cork hospital during the middle of a worldwide crisis and someone stole his
bike from outside the hospital,” he said.
“To say this has hit him hard is an understatement,” he
added, explaining his friend was working a 13-hour shift on his fourteenth day
straight in work.
It also soon emerged the doctor in question should have been on a well-earned day off but was filling in for a colleague who had to go into isolation due to Covid19.
However, when he left the hospital at the end of the
shift he went to get his Trek FX 3 DISC, which he had locked up outside, and it
was gone.
Jamie O’Hara took to Twitter again a few days later to thank
everyone for their support and offers of help.
“I spoke to my friend briefly this morning before he left
for work,” he said. “The messages and offers from the people of Cork and beyond
have really meant the world to him. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.”
