After Rob Lawrence attempted the Irish Everesting record last week, and achieved what he believes is a new record, we decided to compile a list of the fastest Everesting ascents by riders who registered themselves as Irish.
Below is the official full list for Ireland maintained by Hells 500, the group in Australia that devised the Everesting concept and which keeps the official records.
All riders must comply with a series of rules, including riding one climb and one climb only - and doing it from the same side each time - before they reach an elevation the equivalent of Mount Everest, at 8,848 metres.
Well done to anyone of this list and we hope to see many more in the weeks and months ahead.
This list is compiled from fastest at the top down, meaning Dave O'Shea has the record at present. Rob Lawrence will only take it from him if Hells 500 decide Lawrence's ride complied with the rules and if he registers his ride as an Irish performance.
Lawrence, of Ballymena Road Club, did a time of 11 hours 50 minutes and 24 seconds on Sunday in Co Antrim. If ratified that will beat the previous fastest recorded time, which was set by Dave O’Shea on the Shay Elliott climb in Co Wicklow.
O’Shea recorded a time of 14hrs and 47 minutes in August, 2015, and his time is recognised as the fastest time by Hells 500, pending Lawrence's registry of his time.
