Ireland's Megan Armitage secures place on UCI-ranked team for next season

Megan Armitage has secured her first full-year deal with a UCI-level team, having now committed to Team Rupelcleaning. The Continental team is Irish-registered and based in Belgium.

It already has a large Irish contingent on its books for this year, including the Irish team pursuit line-up of Lara Gillespie, Alice Sharpe, Kelly Murphy and Mia Griffin. Irish U23 track international Gaby Honer is also with the team this year.

Armitage is a 25-year-old rapidly emerging Irish road rider. She competed in her first UCI-ranked race only last year, when she rode the National Road Championships for the first time.

This year she has been based in Belgium and in recent months has enjoyed a trial stint at Team Rupelcleaning, often competing against professional riders and already having scored a win on the European scene.

The permanent more to Team Rupelcleaning will open up a full season of UCI-ranked races for Armitage, including events like Le Samyn, Gent Wevelgem, Brabantse Pijl, Scheldeprijs andDwars door Vlaanderen, among others.

And given the impressive rate of her progress in recent months, it should be very interesting to see how Armitage takes to the bigger events and heavier training and racing load.

Armitage took 2nd place, from a two-rider breakaway, in Kermis Erwetegem in Belgium this week. She took her best result two weeks ago by winning Emptinne GP Roland Warnon in Wallonie, again breaking away with one other rider - five-time Belgian champion Ann-Sophie Duyck - and claiming victory in a sprint.

Despite her relative inexperience, she has already this year has made her debut on the national team. She rode Kreiz Breizh Elites Dames last month, placing 23rd with an attacking ride.

We'll catch up with Armitage in coming days.
