Shannon McCurley, the 19-year-old Australian-based teenager who has declared for Ireland, has said she was content with her ride at the World Championships this week, though believes she is capable of much better.

She finished 12th of the 17-rider field in the 10km scratch race and believes she now at least knows what to expect in the future when riding major elite championships.

McCurley told stickybottle that while she would have liked to have done better, she had to be happy with her ride and the learning opportunity afforded by her first elite World Championships.

“It was a hard race, very fast,” she said.

“It wasn’t exactly the result I was looking for but I had a crack. Both my coach John Beasley and I are glad with my improvement but I now know what I need to do to succeed in the future.”

“The fitness got the better of me on that gear and a solid road season now will help with that. It was a great experience being the youngest in the field and it being my first Worlds.”

McCurley’s long term aim is to represent Ireland at the Olympics in four years, though she is not sure yet if she will specialise in track or road.

She will have gained enormously from being around points bronze medal winner this week Caroline Ryan and the similarly unstoppable Martyn Irvine, who both qualified for the London Olympics with his ride in Melbourne and also picked up a very, very handy seventh in the omnium World Title competition in Melbourne.
