Ireland's Eddie Dunbar has suffered a set-back to his 2021 season after being caught up in a crash at Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali (2.1) in Italy today.
The 24-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider was unable to finish the stage and his team said he had been taken to hospital for X-rays after his fall.
We'll bring you more information on Dunbar's condition when he have it, but being forced out of the week-long race, especially on a course suited to him, is a bitter blow.
Dunbar made his return to racing at the start of this season at Tour de la Provence after a longer than planned for winter break after last season was ended prematurely when he crashed at Tirreno-Adriatico last September.
He showed some very good form a couple of weeks ago when he claimed 9th at GP Industria & Artigianato (1.Pro) but has now unfortunately seen his progress interrupted by today's crash on the 163km stage 2 from Riccione to Sogliano al Rubicone.
The stage was won by Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) from Dunbar's team mate Ivan Sosa, both of whom finished four seconds ahead of Nick Schultz (Team BikeExchange) on the uphill finish at the end of an undulating and hard stage.
