Caroline Ryan has today, Thursday, won an amazing bronze medal in the women’s points race at the UCI World Track Championships in Melbourne.
The serving Garda and former international rower benefitted from some smart riding today when she got away in a four-rider group that gained a lap on the rest of the 18-strong field.
Among that crucial escape was Ryan, eventual champion Anastasia Chulkova of Russia, eventual silver medalist Jasmin Glaesser of Canada and Wan Yiu Wong of Hong Kong.
They went clear with just under half of the 25km race remaining and with Ryan also taking third in two of the sprints she collected a total of 24 points, enough to secure her the bronze medal.
She finished just one point ahead of Italian Giorgia Bronzini, the current women’s world road race champion who was active very early on but missed the vital escape.
That’s an absolutely incredible ride by Ryan, who has spent much of her time in recent months training with the Irish triathlon squad at altitude under the watchful eye of former Ras winner turned coach Tommy Evans.
We’ll have more later on Ryan and on Martyn Irvine, who was seventh after two events in the omnium.
