Ireland qualifies large team for World Track Championships

The UCI has revealed the allocations for all events at the World Track Championships and Ireland has done well; qualifying riders in nine races f0r the big showdown in Holland in a month. Above, the two Lydias - Boylan and Gurley - already have a Europeans silver to their name in the Madison.

The success of Irish riders in international track racing during the 2017-2018 season has resulted in nine World Track Championships places.

The Irish women are leading the way with five places qualified. And the men have secured four places for the Worlds next month in Holland.

The racing takes place in Apeldoorn from February 28th to March 3rd.

Both the men and women have scored enough qualification points for places in the following events for Ireland:

  • One rider in men’s omnium
  • One rider in men’s points race
  • Two-rider team in men’s Madison
  • One rider in men’s scratch race
  • One rider in women’s sprint
  • One rider in women’s omnium
  • One rider in women’s points race
  • Two-rider team in women’s Madison
  • One rider in women’s scratch race

Riders in the mix for selection for Ireland include Lydia Boylan and Lydia Gurley.

They claimed a silver medal in the Madison at the Europeans last October in Berlin.

It was Ireland’s only medal at those championships. And they became the first Irish women to win a medal at a major elite championships.

In the men’s Madison, Mark Downey and Felix English have also been successful on the world stage.

They took silver at the UCI World Cup in Cali last February. And the following week they stepped up again; this time taking gold in LA.

Downey has won points race gold in two World Cups.

For her part, Gurley took a bronze in the scratch race in the World Cup; at that Cali meeting 11 months ago.

Marc Potts, above. has ridden well of late on the track. He may get the nod for the Worlds having been 4th in the scratch race at the Europeans, just being pipped for bronze.

Lydia Boylan and Felix English have been Ireland’s main omnium riders of late.

Robyn Stewart has been flying in the sprint and will, barring major incident, be Ireland’s entry in the women’s event in Apeldoorn.
