After last season was wiped out due to the Covid-19 pandemic on both sides of the Border, the domestic cyclocross scene has been given a boost with news a UCI-ranked event will be held here in just over two months.
The event had been planned for some time but with the continued impact of
the pandemic internationally, and a promised round of the UCI World Cup in
Ireland having fallen through, confirmation the race will go ahead is a relied.
Cycling Ireland has announced the event – ‘Verge ‘Cross Clonmel’ will
definitely go ahead, in mid October in Co Tipperary town, with UCI-ranked races
and also other support races for a wide range of categories.
It is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 17th; with
UCI-ranked racing planned for elite men and women and also male and female
juniors. The non-UCI ranked support races will be for riders from the youth
ranks up to the Masters 60 category.
“There will be a large focus on underage racing during the weekend with a
full complement of underage age races on both the 16th and 17th,”
Cycling Ireland said in a statement today.
“There will be M40, M50 and M60 races and support races on the 17th as well
as an additional support race on Saturday the 16th for all categories who want
a leg loosener before the big races on the Sunday.”
The national governing body added the event had “attracted sponsorship from
a broad range of companies who will be announced shortly”.
The UCI has several categories of cyclocross racing, starting with the World
Championships (CM). This is followed by World Cups (CDM). Then comes class 1
(C1) and class 2 (C2), with the Clonmel races awarded C2 classification.
The UCI Bioracer-Atlassian International Cyclocross events held in Belfast in 2018 were also C2 category.
Cycling Ireland said entries would open soon and that any international
riders who wish to take part are asked to get in touch with race organiser John
