Ireland gets six places for men's World Champs
Ireland has qualified a very large number of places for the elite men’s race at the World Championships next months.
A total of six Irish men can ride the title race, with the UCI having confirmed the allocations for Bergen this afternoon.
The allocations are based on the UCI’s World Rankings, rather than the WorldTour.
Ireland is currently ranked 13th in the world with 4,098 points. Each nations points tally is based on points scored in the last 12 months rather than since the start of the 2017 season.
Dan Martin has scored more than half of Ireland’s points. His consistency this year and last have earned him 2,221 points.
The nations’ rankings are calculated by adding all of the points scored by each nation’s eight top-ranked riders.
For Ireland they are, in order: Martin, Sam Bennett (704 points), Nicolas Roche (448), Ryan Mullen (340), Eddie Dunbar (239), Chris McGlinchey (55), Michael O’Loughlin (46) and Conor Dunne (45).
Points in all UCI races, including national championships, count towards each rider’s UCI World Ranking.
Belgium, Spain, Great Britain, Italy, Norway Colombia, France, Australia, Holland and Germany have all qualified the maximum nine places in the road race.
After those top 10-ranked nations, countries placed 11th to 20th on the cut-off date of August 15th secured six places in the men’s road race in Bergen in September.
