Dan Martin on the podium in the climbers’ jersey at the Vuelta 2011; he is ranked 11th in the world at the moment
By Shane Stokes
Irish rider Dan Martin sits eleventh in the latest rankings for cycling’s WorldTour, slipping out of the top ten after Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix race.
Ireland remains 13th in the nations’ rankings despite its sole 2013 points scorer Martin taking a break from racing ahead of some very big goals next week.
He had jumped up to eighth after he won the Volta a Catalunya on March 24th, the best stage race result of his career.
However he hasn’t competed since then, deliberately holding back in order to be in the best possible condition for the upcoming Ardennes Classics.
Martin is aiming for strong results in those three events, namely next Sunday’s Amstel Gold Race, plus the subsequent Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège Classics. He was sixth and fifth respectively in the latter two last year, but is in better form this time round.
His next race is the Brabantse Pijl race on Wednesday, which will serve to give him some additional sharpness after his break from competition.
Ireland currently sits thirteenth overall in the WorldTour team standings. It had been up to eleventh after the Volta a Catalunya and, along with Martin’s own ranking, should improve if his Ardennes campaign goes to plan.
Ireland’s other WorldTour rider, Nicolas Roche, has not yet clocked up points this season. He competed in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco last week but sacrificed his chances for his Team Saxo Tinkoff leader Alberto Contador.
