Ireland has taken a fourth medal at the UCI World Masters Track Championships in Manchester this evening, with Orwell CC’s Orla Hendron taking bronze in the scratch race after an attacking showdown.

She adds that to the silver she won in the points race 45-49 years age category during the opening session on Monday night. Hendron won the world points title at last year’s championships in Portugal.

It has also emerged this evening that Stephen McNally (Orwell CC), who won silver in the men’s 3km pursuit in the 45-49 age category on Monday night, crashed badly last night.

McNally, the European masters pursuit champion, was taking part in a heat in the 45-49 years points race when he came down at the midway stage in the race, after 12 laps.

A total of five riders crashed, with McNally hitting the deck hardest and needing to be taken from the track on a stretcher.

The race was called off after the incident and the points tally that stood after 12 laps counted as the result for qualifying for the final.

Ironically, despite coming off worst in the collision McNally qualified for the final on the basis of his points tally when the race was abandoned.

It is unclear if he will be in a position to take that finals place or how badly hurt he is. We’ll bring you news when we have it.

Apart from Hendron’s bronze this evening in the scratch race, silver in the points and McNally’s pursuit silver, Terry Mackin (Banbridge CC) took a bronze in the 35-59 years kilo TT event on Monday.

The racing continues at the Manchester velodrome tomorrow and Saturday.
