Investigation underway as cyclist dies in crash with van

A man in his 40s has died and another seriously injured  following a collision with a van in Donegal today. The driver of the van was uninjured.

 

A cyclist has been killed and another seriously injured following a road traffic collision at Glenealy, Inishowen this morning.

The incident occurred on the R238 Redcastle to Glenealy road at Moneydarragh just after 9am.

The fatally injured cyclist, believed to be a man in his 40s, was hit by a van and killed instantly while the other was also badly hurt and was rushed to Letterkenny General hospital.

The driver of the van was uninjured but has been taken to hospital for examination.

The fatally injured cyclist was a member of Foyle CC and had ridden for North Pole CC in the past.

Relatives are still being informed of the tragedy, made worse by the fact the deceased rider leaves behind a young family.

The cause of the incident is unknown but a spokesperson for the club said that "everyone is devastated".

The road is still closed as the Garda Forensic Unit carry out a full investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
