A cyclist has died from his injuries after being hit by a car in the latest fatality on Irish roads.
The PSNI has launched an investigation after a cyclist was killed in an early morning collision yesterday.
The dead man, who was in his 50s, lost his life when he was hit by a car at around 5.50am on the A21 in Co Down.
He was struck while riding in the Bangor-bound carriageway near the Somme Heritage Centre. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.
The man’s death was the third cycling fatality on the roads of the North so far this year. To date nine cyclists have been killed on the roads in the Republic.
The road where yesterday’s collision occurred was sealed off for a period while it was examined by police officers working on the investigation into the fatal incident.
North Down DUP MLA Gordon Dunne said there was shock in the area following the cyclist’s death.
“It is devastating that yet another life has been lost on our roads following two other fatalities on roads locally during 2016," he said.
"Sadly this is the second cyclist who has died in an early morning collision in the local area within the last few months.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family and friends at this tragic time.”
The police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward and contact the local PSNI station in Newtownards.
