
A man has been arrested for questioning in connection with the latest death of a cyclist on the roads.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has launched an investigation after a 34-year-old cyclist was killed when he was hit by a lorry.
The fatal crash occurred on Thursday night on the A1 just outside Newry. The dead man has been named as John Paul McKevitt who was from the Newry area.
He was fatally injured when hit by a lorry on the northbound carriageway at about 8:30pm.
An ambulance and the police were called but while Mr McKevitt was treated at the scene and then taken by ambulance to hospital he died a short time later.
A 35-year-old man was arrested after the incident and was questioned for a period by the police. He has since been released pending further investigation.
The dead man’s bike and the lorry involved in the crash has been examined. The scene of the incident was also sealed off and examined as part of the criminal investigation into the death.
The PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit has appealed to the public for assistance in the investigation, asking for anyone who saw the incident or was in the area at the time to come forward.
The SDLP’s MLA for south Down, Karen McKevitt told the Newry Times the death of Mr McKevitt would be felt across the community in the area.
“I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of a cyclist on the A1 carriageway outside Newry,” she said.
“I want to extend my immediate sympathies to the man’s family and friends at this very difficult time.
“I also want to extend my thoughts to the driver of the lorry who will undoubtedly be deeply shaken by this traumatic experience.
“I would encourage anyone who witnessed the accident to contact the police to help with their investigation.”
