Irish national road race champion, Matt Brammeier (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) has been forced out of the Tour of Austria with a knee injury during the sixth stage today, Friday.

The blow comes on the eve of his appeal over his non selection for the Olympics. That appeal is due to be heard by the Olympic Council of Ireland tomorrow.

He said today that he had been suffering from knee pain for the past three days and that on the road today it flared up badly, forcing him out of the race towards the end of the stage.

He has since had the injury examined and has been informed that the problem appears to be muscle strain, for which a number of days rest has been recommended.

Based on Brammeier’s comments, the issue appears to be a minor one that will right itself with some rest in coming days.

Brammeier was second on a stage of the Tour of Austria last year, going very close to the win in a sprint from a breakaway. However, he had lost considerable time in the past few stages of this year’s event due to his knee problem.

Philip Deignan (Unitedhealthcare) finished in 63rd place today in Austria on the same time as stage winner Sacha Modolo (Colnago-CSF Inox). He is 107th overall with two stages remaining. The GC leader is Jakob Fuglsang (Radioshack Nissan).
