Ineos Grenadiers has been hit with its first case of Covid-19 at La Vuelta, with British TT champion Ethan Hayter forced out of the race today before the TT stage.
The 23-year-old would have been one to watch in the 30.9km race against the clock from Elche to Alicante but now he will take no further part in the race.
Ineos Grenadiers confirmed his withdrawal in a brief statement on Tuesday morning, saying: "In line with team and UCI protocols Ethan Hayter has this morning withdrawn from the Vuelta a España after returning a positive lateral flow test."
Hayter is one of four riders, from different teams, who will not start today's TT, which sees the race resume after yesterday's rest day. Mathias Norsgaard (Movistar) and Jarrad Drizners (Lotto Soudal) will also take no further part in the Spanish Grand Tour after positive Covid-19 tests. Edoardo Affini (Jumbo-Visma) is also out with fever.
