
Vitus 2013 Sean Kelly Ltd Edition - €4,484
The Vitus Sean Kelly LTD edition for 2013 sits just below their 11 speed Di2 electronic shifting flagship VRi model. Both feature a T700 unidirectional carbon-fibre frame with the LTD edition kitted out with a full SRAM New Red groupset. With a claimed weight of 6.9kg for the 54cm version (according to Vitus), it's just a shade above the UCI legal weight limit for competition.
The frame weighs 950g (again Vitus's claimed weight) and is manufactured using T700 HM-UD carbon to maximise the mix of handling, strength, stiffness and lightness. The frame comes with a matching HM-UD carbon fork with tapered steerer for added stiffness, responsiveness and comfort.
Although the frame remains largely unchanged for 2013 almost every other component has been replaced. The predominately Dura-Ace affair from 2012 has been replaced with the all new and even lighter Red groupset from SRAM. Although SRAM have decided to remain loyal to a 10 speed system almost every other aspect of the groupset has been reengineered.
Gone are the sharp angles of the brake lever bodies in favour of more curved ergonomically friendly shape hoods. The front derailleur is an entirely new design and is a vast improvement over the previous version. SRAM have done away with the need for shifter trim as the derailleur actually adjusts itself based on gear selection. The addition of a built-in chain catcher is also a nice touch that Andy Schleck would surely approve of.
One of the more visually striking upgrades to the Red lineup is the beefy looking chainset. Now sporting almost TT like chainrings SRAM claims it now has a higher stiffness to weight ratio than Shimano's Dura-Ace chainset although this was before the arrival of the 9000 series earlier this year. The LTD edition comes race ready and is fitted with "Kelly approved" 53/39 chainrings. No compact softness for King Kelly!
The wheels are Mavic's new Ksyrium model, the SLS. With lighter spokes, rear hub and rims they weigh a very respectable 1,395g a pair.
The cockpit includes a no nonsense aluminium affair from 3T with a Pro stem and bars. The saddle is a Prologo Scratch Pro, while Mavic round off this very competitively priced, race ready package with Yksion tyres.
