Having won the inaugural event in 2007 and finished runner-up a year later by a mere second to Ciarán Power, Sean Lacey knows the Suir Valley Three-Day this weekend is an event he’s capable of taking again.
Lacey, who won Rás Clar at the weekend and the Dan Donovan Memorial in Fermoy a week previous, will go to the line as the favourite and few could argue with that tag such is his form.
“Yeah I reckon I’ll have a good chance,” the Tralee native told stickybottle.
“Last year I was in the top three overall until I got a mechanical on the hill climb and lost a bit of time. But I won the race in the inaugural year and I was a second off winning it the following year so there’s no reason why I can’t win it again.”
The Dan Morrissey-Speedy Spokes squad has been hugely impressive this year and Lacey puts their success down to their strength in depth and close-knit relationship.
“We gel well together. Unfortunately when there’s so many of us in a race there’s always going to be someone left back in the bunch when there’s someone up the road but I suppose it’s a good complaint to have,” he mused.
Last weekend in west Clare it was again Lacey and team mate Stephen Clancy who got on the podium but with national veteran’s champion Joe Fenlon getting placed for the second week in a row and Clancy emerging as a threat, it could be another stellar weekend for the Cork-based club.
“We’ve a strong team going up to Clonmel so we’ll have a number of different options. Mick Fitzgerald is strong, Páidi is strong, as are Joe and Stephen so we don’t mind (who we work for).”
Asked if Dan Morrissey and Speedy Spokes will be their chief backers next year, Lacey was in no doubt.
“They’re very happy with the team, we’ve had good success so it’s onwards and upwards again for next year.”
