Born in Warsaw but living in Ireland for almost a decade now, 17 year-old Patrick Goszczyk emerged as one of the stars of the Scott Bicycles Junior Tour of Ireland last week.

Having settled with his family in Dunboyne, Co Meath, he claimed the prize for the most aggressive rider on the national tour.

Goszczyk was part of a strong NRPT-Magnet.ie team that claimed two stage wins through its sprinter Nathan Pernot.

“I was just hoping to get around it as I’m only a first-year junior but I wasn’t expecting to get the prize for the most aggressive rider,” he said modestly.

“I’m really happy overall because we rode well as a team; Alexis Roche, Caimin Muldoon and myself always had a good plan before the race to lead out Nathan for the sprints and we managed to get two wins.

“Only for the guy (Jules Gillam of Team Specialized) going off by himself on the final day we’d have had three because Nathan was second there in Ennis,” he added.

He will now turn his attention to the Suir Valley Three-Day where the competition will be as intense as anything he’s faced, after which the Junior National Championships in a month will be targeted.

And next year, Goszczyk will be eligible to ride for Ireland, something he’s extremely excited about.

“In my family no one was really into cycling but once I started my parents encouraged me in every single race and they bring me everywhere.

“I’ll be getting my Irish passport next year so I can finally try to get picked on the Irish team.”
