The bike Peter Sagan used to win the 2018 Paris Roubaix has been stolen in an organised robbery targeting a Specialized premises in the US.
The haul stolen was valued at about
$160,000 and included some collectable bikes ridden by top riders in the
biggest races in the world.
As well as Sagan’s Paris
Roubaix-winning bike, the bike he used in the Tour de France last year was also
taken.
A customised yellow bike ridden by Fabian
Cancellara in the 2010 Tour de France was also taken as was Tony Martin’s Shiv
from the 2012 Olympic Games, when he won silver behind Bradley Wiggins.
A total of 16 bikes were stolen
including some prototypes and two Stumpjumpers belonging to company
owner Mike Sinyard as well as bikes owned by staff members.
The robbery, carried out by men using a van and a truck,
occurred at Specialized Bicycle Components in Morgan Hill, California, last
weekend though news of it has only emerged now.
Morgan Hill Police
Department said its officers were called to the property at about 4.30pm on
Sunday and when they arrived found a burglary scene.
“The
stolen bicycles were part of a large collection of one of a kind prototypes,
race-winning and personally owned bikes Specialized had on display in their
building. The total value of stolen property is estimated to be approximately $160,000.00,” it said in a
statement yesterday.
It added the
burglars were recorded on CCTV using a Toyota 4Runner and a white box van during.
“The
suspects placed the bicycles into the white van and both vehicles fled the
scene. The maroon Toyota 4Runner was later located unoccupied in Salinas, California. The white box van containing
the stolen bicycles is still outstanding.
“Specialized
Bicycle Components is offering a
$25,000 reward to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the
burglary and or the return of all stolen
bicycles.”
