Ireland’s top junior time trialist and European TT Championship silver medallist, Ryan Mullen has said he was not happy with his 9th place at the World Junior TT Championships yesterday in Valkenburg, saying he did not feel right and had gone better in local club races.

He was also disappointed for the people who have helped him within the Irish set-up, saying he would have loved to have repaid them with a medal.

“I’m not too happy, there was something missing,” he told stickybottle.

“I couldn't quite find that rhythm I'm used to having. There was a couple of percent missing anyway. I'm happy enough considering I didn't have the best legs but I've had better rides in local 10 mile TTs down the road from me.”

Mullen said he has been delighted with the set-up in the Irish camp in Valkenburg since being one of the first to arrive at the weekend.

“The support staff were bang on as usual, such a good atmosphere and morale within the team. They're great. I just wish I could have got a medal for them. I came here with a medal in mind; I was 15 seconds off one.”

Mullen said he was now looking forward to the junior men’s world title road race on Sunday, where he will be joined by Cormac Clarke and Matthew Doyle, both of whom have been finalising their preparations with another racing stint in Belgium in recent weeks. Thomas Fallon has been named as the reserve rider.

“I feel like I've something to prove there,” Mullen said of the road race.

He added he was thankful to Padraig Marrey, who has coached him this year and also coached Mark Scanlon to the world junior road race title – also in Valkenburg – back in 1998. Mullen said David McCann had also been of particular assistance of late, working with him to tweak his position in a process he believed had “really helped me find a good few seconds”.
