First-year U23 rider Dermot Trulock (Lucan CRC) gave back-to-back eye-catching performances over the weekend; winning the Tommy Brady memorial in Robinstown last night and following it up with third in the Mullingar GP today, Sunday.

That he beat some established names last night was impressive but being edged by top domestic amateurs Mark Dowling (ASEA-Wheelworx) and winner Ian Richardson (UCD-Fitzcycles.ie) shows he’s clearly on an upward curve.

Last night he was alert from the start - and clearly keen on making an early impression.

“There was a break of 12 which I created coming through the start/finish area,” said Trulock of his maiden win as an A1 last night.

“I saw I had it lined out so I kept the pressure on.

“I saw there was a group of about 10 which could stay with me. We started to work and got a little gap and then on the main road there was a big tailwind so I went to the front and rode as hard as I could.

“I knew Mark Dowling (ASEA-Wheelworx) was in the bunch and when I saw the gap was big enough I got the others to start pulling through and we got a gap of 1’30”.”

The race was only 65 kilometres so was always going to be lively and there was no more selections after that initial one.

So it came down to a reduced bunch sprint which the Lucan CRC man won from.

“I kicked with 350 metres to go and held everyone off,” he recalled.

“The form is there now for the Suir Valley so I’m hoping to do well there and maybe get in the frame for a national selection of some sort.”
