“I missed the break the first stage, so today it was all out attack”

Damien Travers notched one of three wins for Dungarvan Cycling Club yesterday when he claimed the third stage of the O’Leary’s Stone Kanturk Three-Day, following up A4 winner Dwayne Kirwan and U14 victor Mark McGarry’s respective triumphs.

Travers was certainly made work for it though, having been out front from as early as the second of five laps.

Not only that, but the five-man break he was part of contained a general classification danger man from Mego Racing Team, meaning the chase was on behind from an early point in the race.

"We were away from the second lap, five of us, the break was chasing hard because Mego had a man high up overall,” explained Travers, who last won in Kanturk in 2011.

“The bunch chased hard so the Mego lads sat up on the third lap. But as soon as they were reeled in we got the gap up to a minute and held it as best we could.”

Travers’ breakaway partner was Brian McArdle of Orwell Wheelers and they did some long, painful pulls on the front in a bid to stay away.
