Christopher McGlinchey and Jake Gray had a great tussle in the Potato Race promoted by North Pole CC yesterday afternoon.
McGlinchey nicked it by the width of a wheel but he saluted the efforts of one of the most talented juniors in the country who pushed him all the way.
“I knew I had it but it was very close,” said a modest McGlinchey of Chainreaction.
“Jake was really strong, we got up the road after the initial break developed and were kinda busy watching each other so the remaining five caught back on to us.
“But when they did, we worked again until around eight kilometres to go,” he added.
Indeed, McGlinchey was very strong and only Gray managed to stay with him on the climbs.
“I feel really good, the legs have been great the last few weeks,” continued McGlinchey.
“I think I’ve been playing the races a little badly so far this year; getting in the winning moves but going with the wrong final attacks.
“I’ve been feeling strong so I’m happy where I’m at.”
Similarly, Gray said he was pleased to get second, given he’s not yet near his best form.
“I’ve not yet done as much training as previous years but I’d say I’m a lot stronger," he said.
“I’ve only really started upping it the last two months; I’m not in top, top form but I’m getting there.
“Chris had made a few attacks from the break today and I knew he was very strong so on the run-in to the finish I watched him; it was cat and mouse and I couldn’t let him out of my sight,” he said.
