"I didn’t know how the legs would be, but I got Armstrong in the sprint"

Eoin Morton’s focus right now might be the World Cycling League in Los Angeles next month but the UCD CC man had road legs to burn at the Phoenix GP this afternoon, beating a stellar cast on a tough day for racing.

The Dubliner had been one of the most active riders in the race and as well as having to first close down the limit groups, he spent almost three laps out front with Ali Macaulay (ASEA-Wheelworx ) before they were caught with five kilometres to go.

His race looked run at that point as a group of 10 came up from behind to contest the final but Morton dug a little deeper and claimed a fantastic win from runner-up Adam Armstrong (ASEA-Wheelworx).

“I didn’t know how the legs would be; the track is always in the back of my mind at the moment but I wasn’t sure about my endurance,” he said.

“It was tough today. We had to catch the A2 group who were 2½ minutes up the road and myself and Ian (Richardson, teammate) managed to miss the group that went across so we had to work to get back on terms.”

When the groups did eventually merge Morton didn’t hang around.

“Myself and Ali were away for around 2½ laps but got caught with 5k to go and everyone who was up in the results the day before was there.

“Ali and Christopher McGlinchey (ChainReaction) attacked and got away but they stalled in the sprint so me and Adam came past them and I got him in the sprint.

“I didn’t know whether I got it or not, I was looking down at Adam’s wheel. I’ve had a dead heat before as an A3 but I was lucky enough to get it by a whisker.”
