David Watson made it win number three for the season today with a gutsy ride in the Coombes-Connor Memorial in Drogheda.

The North Down CC man gave himself a pile of work to do when he found himself having to chase from the third group on the road up to the head of affairs.

He only managed to get back to the head of the race with a few kilometres remaining.

The Tour of the North winner said he kept missing moves but when no break gained significant time he always knew he had a chance.

“There were moves going all day but it was a fast course and it sort of kept everything together,” he said.

“Having said that I kept missing moves, there were three or four different groups on the road at one point and I ended up having to do the Lion’s share of the chasing, just moving through groups.”

He’s clearly got some good form at the minute because he was able to jump from group to group without taking anyone with him.

The biggest gap any group pulled out was 50 seconds but a lack of commitment meant the advantages gained never moved above the one minute margin.

“There was a wee rise and I gave a bit of a kick to get away from the group I was in and get onto the back of the three up ahead.

“I got my breath back, did a bit of work with them and then coming in the road there was a bit of cat and mouse.

“No one wanted to lead it in, Anthony Murray (Subaru Albion) got across to make it more tricky, but Angus started the sprint and I had the legs to take it on the line.
