National time-trial champion Michael Hutchinson (In Gear – Quickfit RT) who has been selected for the upcoming World Championships has shown he’s in continued great form by taking the British and Irish record for the 25-mile time trial at the weekend.

British-based Hutchinson clocked a time of 45 minutes, 46 seconds in the event hosted by Port Talbot Wheelers to beat fellow Ulsterman David McCann’s existing record by eight seconds.

The new mark is the quickest time ever recorded on British roads and will be a new Irish record as long as it is ratified by Cycling Ireland.

McCann had set his record back in 2009, when he beat Chris Boardman’s long-standing record. McCann then went on to finish 10th in the World Championships in Mendrisio shortly afterwards, where he finished ahead of Brad Wiggins and Chris Froome amongst others.

Hutchinson’s record-breaking ride follows on from lowering his own record for 10-miles last month, when he clocked 17:45.

He said after his weekend ride: "Just like the 10 record a couple of weeks ago, I wasn't really going there intending to go for the record. The conditions weren't quite as good as they were for the 10 and I felt like I had seen better days on that course, but obviously haven't gone quicker. There was a bit of a breeze but if it's in the right place it helps you."

Both Hutchinson and McCann have been named as starters for the World Championship TT on September 19th. The course is quite difficult with the riders facing three climbs over 45 kilometres, and finishing just after the Cauberg.
