Hundreds of people today turned out for what is believed to be the biggest ever cycling protest or vigil in Dublin. It was for Thiago Cortes, who has died from injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run while cycling in the city on Monday night.

The 28-year-old from Brazil worked as a Deliveroo delivery cyclist and was hit by a driver on North Wall Quay at about 10.30pm on Monday. While he was taken by ambulance to the Mater Hospital, Mr Cortes has since sadly died from his injuries.

The driver of the car fled the scene and while the vehicle has been recovered by gardai no arrests have yet been made and nobody has come forward to accept responsibility for the crime.

Cyclists and other members of the public joined with delivery cyclists from Deliveroo and companies like Uber Eats as well representatives from political parties and unions as Mr Cortes’s friends and colleagues marched up O’Connell St for a rally and vigil at about 6pm.
