A bad crash that resulted in one rider receiving over 60 stitches forced the cancellation of the final round of the SEAT Super 7 Crit Series last night.

Craig Arrigan of DID Dunboyne crashed into the back of a parked car after one lap and the race was promptly halted, such were the severity of his injuries.

He was subsequently taken to Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, Co Down, where he was treated. At the time of writing, stickybottle understand he is still undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Arrigan went to the event in support of his teammate Mark Dowling who started the night as leader of the series and was later crowned as winner of the event, though he was level on points with Jake Gray (NRPT-Magnet.ie).

He won based on a greater number of high placings throughout the previous six rounds.

It was a dreadful way to end the series which has been hugely popular all summer and very well-attended.

That was the case again last night in Bangor for the event promoted by North Down CC, with a number of the country’s best riders all signing on.

It was the decision of the PSNI to call off the event and a spokesperson for the crit series praised the work and immediate response of medical personnel and race officials, respectively.

“It was a very bad accident but thankfully, it’s not any worse,” the spokesman said.

“The race was abandoned by the police straight after the accident.

“It was a real shame to end the series like that because it’s 20 years since Bangor hosted a race here in the centre.

“And we’d hate to think something freak like this could end it going forward.

“The riders were obviously shocked but they accepted the decision to cancel the race and had nothing but praise for the police after."

We’ll keep you up to date with Arrigan’s condition as we hear news of it.
