A high speed crash has marred the finish of the opening stage at the Tour de Pologne, which saw Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) cross the line first.
Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-QuickStep)
was coming around Groenewegen, to the Dutch rider’s right, when Groenewegen
leaned towards his sprint rival.
That pushed Jakobsen a little to the right and towards the barriers, resulting in the awful crash.
Jakobsen crashed through the barriers and off the road, towards a race official who was standing behind the barriers.
The Deceuninck-QuickStep rider appeared to hit the man standing behind the barriers and medics rushed in to attend to both.
The impact of the crash saw advertising hoarding and the barriers it was hung on spinning out into the road and into the bunch, which was traveling at full speed on the downhill finishing straight.
There were about eight fallers but Jakobsen was of
particular concern because of the way he crashed through the barriers and off
the road.
At the time of writing Deceuninck-QuickStep
said Jakobsen was being treated by doctors.
The race was marred by tragedy last year when Bjorg Lambrecht, the young rising Belgian star competing with Lotto-Soudal, crashed on stage 3 and tragically died from his injuries.
Today Dylan Groenewegen and Fabio Jakobsen, who both crashed, crossed the line 1st and 2nd. However, Groenewegen has been disqualified, meaning Jakobsen has been awarded victory and the race lead; though it is unclear when he will ride again.
The rider who was third across the line and is now upgraded to 2nd place, Marc Sarreau of Groupama-FDJ, was also one of the fallers and he had been taken to hospital by ambulance from the finish area.
More as we get it.
