Elite international rider Siobhan Horgan has been told the arm injury she sustained in a fall in France last weekend is severe bruising and not a potentially season-derailing broken wrist diagnosed by French medical staff.
Had her wrist been confirmed as broken, Horgan was facing a lay off from racing of at least several weeks.
This would have severely hampered her efforts in the months ahead to score the UCI world ranking points she needs to push herself into the top 100 in the world and into the Olympic qualification places.
Horgan told stickybottle she was delighted with the news and was hopeful she could return to training on the road this weekend with a view to racing immediately.
The Cork rider, who was placed in the A1/A2 Ras Luimni two weeks ago, came down in the Cholet Pays de Loire (1.2) last Sunday.
She got back on the bike, regained contact and finished 29th. The GSD Gestion rider was part of a group of just over 30 that finish 45 seconds down on French lone winner Audrey Cordon (Vienne Futuroscope) in the 116km race.
However, immediately on falling she thought she had badly injured her wrist or hand and by the end of the race was unable to stand on the pedals because she could not take any weight on her right hand holding the handlebars.
She went to hospital in France after the race, where a broken bone in her wrist was diagnosed. She then travelled back to Cork after being forced to accept that a scheduled ride in a World Cup race in Italy this coming weekend would not be possible.
However, a second opinion medical consultation and X-Ray in Cork today, Friday, revealed that her wrist is badly bruised rather than broken. While the pain she is experiencing would still not allow her race in Italy this weekend, Horgan can at least take comfort in the fact that she is not facing a long lay off.
While she can resume racing soon in search of UCI ranking points, she believes securing an Olympic place will be “very tough”.
We’ll hopefully have a blog entry from Siobhan Horgan in a short while.
