Former national road race champion, Siobhan Horgan had a very testing time at the World Championships in Valkenburg this afternoon, being seriously hampered with mechanical problems before she was pulled out of the race with just lap remaining.

“It was a big goal for this season so it really is very, very disappointing,” she told stickybottle of her Worlds performance.

The Cork woman and her Ireland team mate Olivia Dillon were among those caught up in a spectacular crash that completely blocked the road in the early stages of the elite women’s 128.8km race.

Horgan said while her brakes and levers were slightly damaged in the collision she did not feel she had any serious problems. However, tissue paper then got stuck in her gears.

“The gears wouldn’t work and then I had to get a new bike. The gears on that weren’t working properly and I had to get serviced again, it was very frustrating. The group I was in when I had to change bikes all got back onto the bunch.”

When Horgan finally got serviced after changing bikes, she was riding around in a group over 10 minutes down on the leaders when the race officials decided to pull her group out as they were going onto the last lap because they were so far down.

“I really felt they could have let us ride around for the last lap. I really felt strong so the way it all went was disappointing.”

The race was won by Olympic road champion Marianne Vos from Holland, who attacked her breakaway companions the final time up the Cauberg and powered in for a very convincing victory.
