Clonmel CC have never been shy of the hard work that goes into promoting great races and they've come up with what looks like a real humdinger of an event next month. The three-stage event is open to A3 and A4 riders only and will be of big interest to anyone who can climb (Photo: DC Images)
A new one-day, three-stage race promoted by Clonmel Cycling Club has been added to the domestic cycling calendar for A3 and A4 riders only.
To be held on Sunday, May 29th, riders will compete in what the organisers are calling a “mini Suir Valley”.
However, while the Suir Valley race has four stages in three days, the new event will be all run off in one day.
First up in the morning is a 1.2-kilometre hill climb that was last featured in the Suir Valley in 2012, when Ryan Sherlock set the quickest time.
That’s followed in the afternoon by a lumpy 50-kilometre road stage.
And in the evening the riders will tackle a short but hard 26-kiloemtre road race, finishing on a well-known climb outside the town.
That ascent is very popular with local cyclists and it’s where the Suir Valley reaches its conclusion on the Monday of the August Bank Holiday.
However, the new race will travel up the side riders usually pedal back in towards the town.
The 'three stages in one day' event was devised by Declan Byrne and sounds like a great idea.
The race is the brainchild of Declan Byrne who club official Keith Colville said wants to try something new.
The event is only open to A3 and A4 riders and they will have separate races for both categories.
“The hill climb will kick things off first thing in the morning and put some order on the GC,” Colville said.
“Then there’s the 50-kilometre rolling stage on a circuit that was used for the national vets’ and women’s championships in 2012.
“Riders will do battle over four laps there and then the evening stage is a short and hard road stage which finishes up the mountain road.
“It will start from Hillview sports club, head out onto the main Waterford road, on towards Kilsheelan and return via the back road to Clonmel.
“Declan Byrne came up with the idea to give the A3 and A4 riders a feel for a Suir Valley-type event.
“Some of the A4 riders may never have done a stage race before so it’s to give them a taste of it.”
Stage and overall leaders winners will each receive jerseys sponsored by VeloRevolution.
Entry will be made through Eventmaster and should be live on the club website in the coming days.
