Dan Martin in action in the recent Critérium du Dauphiné
Irish climber Dan Martin has been confirmed as part of the Garmin Barracuda line-up for this year’s Tour de France which starts in Liege on Saturday week.
It will be Martin’s first ride in the race, having been forced to pull out on the eve of the start in 2009 because of a knee problem.
His inclusion in the team, which was expected, was confirmed by both Garmin Barracuda and the Dutch-based Sports Entertainment Group that represents him.
Martin has opted not to ride the National Road Race Championships in Clonmel this weekend in order to give himself more time to recover from injuries he sustained during a crash in the Critérium du Dauphiné earlier this month.
The Garmin Barracuda team for the three-week Tour de France is a very strong one, capable of sprint and mountain stage wins as well as a tilt at the GC.
It consists of: Tyler Farrar, Christian Vande Velde, Dan Martin, Tom Danielson, Giro winner Ryder Hesjedal, Robbie Hunter, David Millar, Johan Vansummeren and David Zabriskie.
Martin’s inclusion in the team for the Tour means Ireland will have two potential stage winners and GC hopes in the race, with Nicolas Roche lining out as part of his Ag2r La Mondiale team.
We’ll bring you more news on this when we get it.
