Two cyclists were badly injured at the Giro d'Italia today, and at least one of them is out of the race, after crowd control barriers were blown into the road causing them to crash.
It appeared a helicopter was flying over the race at the time and got so low it blew the steel barriers into the road and into the riders.
Both of the riders are with the Italian ProContinental team Vini Zabú-Brado-KTM, which confirmed Etienne Van Empel and Luca Wackermann were the riders involved.
Vini Zabú-Brado-KTM said Van Empel managed to get up and struggled - "with pain" - to the finish line just up the road. However, Wackermann was unable to get to the finish and was instead taken to hospital, with suspected broken bones.
The stage - which took the riders 140km from Catania to Villafranca Tirrena - came down to a bunch sprint won by Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) from Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) and Davide Ballerini (Deceuninck-QuickStep).
At the top of the general classification, João Almeida (Deceuninck-QuickStep) still has the maglia rosa and slightly extended his lead today.
He started the stage in the leader's jersey but equal on time with yesterday's stage winner Jonathan Caicedo (EF Pro Cycling). However, Almeida (22) managed to gain two seconds on his rival for pink at an intermediate sprint point today.
Sagan, who was 2nd both today and on Sunday, has assumed control in the points classification. He is now hoping to hold the jersey after being denied an eighth green jersey at the Tour de France by Ireland's double stage winner Sam Bennett.
