"Hearing the crowd roar and knowing I'd it won was best feeling ever"

Sean Yelverton took the biggest result of his career when he won the A3 event at the Gas Networks Ireland-VisitNenagh.ie Classic yesterday.

In taking victory, the Mego Racing Team rider won just his second ever race and said it was particularly satisfying as he’s been a ‘nearly man’ for so long.

“It finally worked out for me today and it’s definitely my biggest win,” he said, almost disbelievingly.

“I was especially delighted because it’s a home race for me and I know the roads like the back of my hand, which was a big help.”

Yelverton was part of the day’s break that escaped early in the 113-kilometre race and stayed away to the finish.

“We got away on the first long climb and picked up a few ahead of us which swelled the group to around 15 or more.

“I had my teammate Shane Kenny in there as well which was a perfect situation.

“We rode well together for the majority but then guys were attacking and things got a bit disorganised.

“When we got into the last hill it was steady at the start but the attacks came and whittled it down to six or eight.”
And it was then that Yelverton sensed his chance.

“There was a lot of attacks in the main road but I managed to make one stick with about 10km to go,” he recalled.

“I had a tailwind so I knew I had a good chance of staying away.

“Coming around the last corner with all the crowd roaring and knowing I had it in the bag was the best feeling ever.”

Yelverton is a junior this year and though he might lack the reputation of some of the more established men, he’s not overawed when it comes to targeting some big goals.

“It's definitely a big boost going into future races, especially considering the standard of the juniors,” he said of his win.

“But I know I have to keep my head down and work hard because there's no easy race.

“My main goals from here are to perform well in the Junior Tour and to try and pick up a stage win.

“But I would also love to get selected for the Irish team and I hope today's performance is a step in that direction.”
