Have your say on who should be inducted into Irish cycling's Hall of Fame

Stephen Roche and Sean Kelly are both already in the Irish cycling Hall of Fame, but now is the chance for you to nominate the next three people who should be inducted

Cycling Ireland has opened nominations to Irish cycling's Hall of Fame and now you can have your say in who should be next to join the great names already inducted, including former great riders and also many of the people who still keep Irish cycling on the road behind the scenes.

Many of those already in the Hall of Fame raced many years ago - some of whom are now deceased - while a lot of the officials who are, rightly, already included have been around for many years, continuing their invaluable work organising, and officiating at, races.

The Irish cycling Hall of Fame is a relatively new idea and entry is tightly controlled. New entrants can only be inducted every three years and only three new people at a time can be added. That slower process should help ensure recency bias does not adversely impact the process and ensure those who are truly deserving end up in the Hall of Fame.

That process is now open and any person, living or deceased, can be nominated. Cycling Ireland said nominees must have made a "significantly important impact on cycling in Ireland, which may include sporting, administrative and other impact".

Nominations must be lodged with Cycling Ireland - via [email protected] - with the heading 'Hall of Fame nomination' and should include a brief citation outlining why the nominee is deserving of induction. You must have your nominees lodged by July 30th.

"All nominations will then be reviewed by a shortlisting panel comprised of representatives of the four provincial executives and a board member," Cycling Ireland, adding the panel would not include anyone who is nominated and who would accept the nomination.

"The shortlisting panel will propose six options to the Board of Cycling Ireland who will then select the final three for induction to the Hall of Fame for 2023. Members of our organisation make a significant impact on cycling in Ireland in very diverse ways and we look forward to nominations reflecting that diversity."

The former riders and former and current officials already inducted into Fall of Fame include: Billy Kennedy, Gerry Beggs, Richard Byrne, Gerard Campbell, Philip Cassidy, Joe Christle, Noel Clarke, Peter Crinnion, Dan Curtin, Dermot Dignam, Alo Donegan, Bertie Donnelly, Shay Elliott, Morris Foster, Sean Kelly, Oliver Kelly, Richard J Mercredy, JJ McCormack, Ben McKenna, Pat McQuaid, Shay O'Hanlon, Peter Purfield, Harry Reynolds, Stephen Roche, Mark Rohan, Alice Sherratt, Denis Toomey, Jack Watson, Isabel Woods.
