Following on from his impressive performance at the An Post Rás last month, 23 year-old Marc Potts has been added to the Irish senior track squad.
The Tyrone man will link up with the national team in Majorca for a training camp over the coming weeks in an effort to ascertain whether he has what it takes to compete in an intense programme of racing planned for the coming winter.
Cycling Ireland has been in talks with Potts since the beginning of the year with a view to bringing him into the set-up.
And according to high performance coach Brian Nugent, he has “great potential”.
Potts will join up with the national squad’s U23 riders who featured in several of the UCI Track World Cups last winter.
Those riders include Thomas Fallon, Javan Nulty, Cormac Clarke and Ryan Mullen.
Potts, who was 10th on stage 7 of the Rás and finished third-best county rider overall - in 26th place - is the only rider added to the group of track athletes training in Majorca.
Meanwhile, following his third-place overall at the Rás, Mullen is currently in camp in Majorca along with Caroline Ryan as they knuckle down to prepare for the upcoming European Games in Azerbaijan in two weeks’ time.
Both will do the time-trial and the road race there.
Also in Majorca, where the national team has a training base, is rising junior star Josie Knight.
The Kerry woman has two major track targets this year; the European Championships and World Championships in August and September respectively.
Knight will be joined in Majorca by the remaining junior riders after the Leaving Cert exams are over towards the end of the month.
