Hapless drivers in Dublin struggling to get to grips with new cycle lanes

These drivers all parked on the cycle lane rather than in the parking spaces, marked in red. If the drivers had parked where they were supposed to, they would have created a car-protected cycle lanes

If you build it, they will come; right? Well, Dublin City
Council built a parking-protected cycle lane and things didn’t exactly go
according to plan.

The idea was simple – at least it was supposed to be –
when the parking-protected cycle lane was installed on Parkgate St in Dublin’s
north inner city.

A cycle lane was marked out on the road right beside the
kerb and then parking spaces were marked out next to the cycle lane.

When the drivers arrived and parked their cars, those
parked vehicles were supposed to create a barrier between the cycle lane and
the road; protecting and segregating the cycle lanes from vehicles being driven
on the road.

However, the drivers clearly didn’t get the memo. When
they arrived at the location to park their cars, they parked them right next to
the kerb, on top of the cycle lane.

And the parking spaces further out in the road were left
empty. Hopefully the drivers will get the hang of it soon. If not, some
enforcement activity might focus the mind.
