Having been deposed from his position of race leadership on a Tour de France stage of high drama yesterday Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) has handled himself brilliantly.

Rather than complain at the unusual circumstances of his losing the jersey - when the stage was abandoned - he said it was an honour to hold the race lead for so long, adding he was beaten by better riders.

Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) took yellow from him and began today's stage as the new race leader.

And as the action got underway properly, the new yellow and former holder exchanged this handshake of mutual respect; hidden away deep in the peloton but picked out brilliantly by the cameraman.
