Motorist suspected of causing death or grievous bodily injury by careless driving
The driver of a van that collided with a cyclist leaving him critically ill was arrested by the PSNI.
A statement from the police force confirmed the driver had been arrested. He was held on suspicion of causing death or grievous bodily injury by careless driving.
The incident took place on the Glenshane Road in Co Derry yesterday morning.
The collision occurred on the stretch between the turns off the road for Maghera and Knockcloghrim.
A photograph emerged of the vehicle and bike showing both badly damaged.
The cyclist, a man in his 20s, remains critically ill in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
“Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses following a road traffic collision on the Glenshane Road near Maghera yesterday, Thursday, 16th November," the PSNI said in a statement today.
“The collision, involving a transit van and a cyclist, occurred at around 8.30am near the turn off for Maghera.
“A cyclist, aged in his 20s, remains in a critical condition in hospital.
“The driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of causing death or grievous bodily injury by careless driving. He has since been released on police bail, pending further police inquiries.”
Inspector Andrew Archibald said reiterate the police’s witness appeal.
“I am appealing to anyone who was on the Glenshane Road between 8.10am and 8.30am on Thursday morning and has any information they believe could help the investigation, or who may have witnessed the incident to contact police.”
