The Irish Road Club has confirmed the news the road racing community was hoping for; bike racing is to resume at Mondello Park in Co Kildare.
All cycling races on the motor racing circuit were
suspended last week after several crashes during round 1 and round 3 of the
Mondello Series, organised by Irish Road Club, in recent weeks.
Social media criticism of the way the series was organised, which was rejected by the club, was also a factor in the decision to cancel one round of the series.
Last week the promoting club initially announced that
yesterday’s planned ‘round 4’ of the series was cancelled and that the series
was being kept under rolling review – though it was continuing.
Just days later, Irish Road Club issued a new statement with the news that all bike racing at Mondello Park had been suspended indefinitely.
However, the club has now confirmed the suspension of
bike racing has been lifted, meaning the Mondello Series – and planned youth
races – can now go ahead again.
The Mondello Series will resume next Tuesday and the planned Bikeology Youth Series can also go ahead on Wednesday evenings. Races are now resuming after a “review” was carried out by Mondello Park management, Cycling Ireland and the Irish Road Club.
Alice Sherratt of Usher Irish Road Club welcomed the return
of racing, saying it was “just great
that we can provide a safe venue for the road racing community”, especially for
young riders.
Cycling Ireland president, Ciaran McKenna, said Mondello
Park had become “such an important venue for Cycling Ireland activities” over
the years.
“It is incredibly important for this relationship to continue to the benefit of all our members, we are thankful for Mondello Park for their understanding over the past weeks and look forward to the resumption of cycling activities,” he said.
