The Great Dublin Bike Ride will go ahead this year, but in a very different format because of the restrictions in place due to Covid19.
Because the phases of easing Ireland’s lockdown have been
stalled, and cases of infection have spiked significantly in three counties,
the event will not take place this year as a regular sportive.
Rides will not gather and ride the same course at the
same time, as is always the case with sportives. Instead, cyclists are being
asked to pick one of three bike ride distances to complete on the day; Sunday,
September 27th.
It means cyclists will still take in a bike ride on the
day and money will be raised for charity, even if the regular format sportive
is not possible at present.
Cycling Ireland is asking cyclists to register for the event and complete the
family ride 20km distance, the moderate 60km or the longer 100km on the day in
your local area.
There is also an option to ride one of the distances
virtually (Zwift, Rouvy, Static) starting at 10am on the day.
When cyclists register, the event is free for Cycling
Ireland members riding on the roads or €5 for non Cycling Ireland members
riding on the roads. And the virtual ride on the day is free to all.
Cycling Ireland has partnered with four charities: Focus
Ireland, Aware, Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin and Children's
Health Foundation Temple Street and Irish Cancer Society.
This year the localised or virtual event is being held on
a non-profit basis and any money raised will be distributed among the four
charities.
“Our communities are facing unprecedented challenges and
although it is not possible for thousands of cyclists to gather together as we
have done previously, through the generosity of our athletes and partners, we
will ride together to raise vital funds and create a tangible impact,” said Garry
Nugent, Cycling Ireland’s event officer
“We’re grateful for the work these non-profit
organizations are offering to help provide relief in this difficult time.”
