The Government is set to invest €500,000 in the final section of the European-wide Eurovelo 1 cycle route in Ireland.

In total, the Eurovelo 1 ‘Atlantic Coast route’ is
11,000km, running from Norway to Scotland and on to Northern Ireland before
entering the Republic into Donegal.

From there it follows the coast through Leitrim, Sligo,
Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Kerry, Cork and Waterford onto its finishing
point in Rosslare, Co Wexford.

The route then extends into Wales, England, France and Spain and onto its conclusion in Portugal.

The investment of €500,000 in the Republic’s stretch of the route is modest considering how long the route is here. However, the money will be spent on signage to mark out the Irish section through Cork - at 475km.

And once the signage on the final Cork section has been done, that will conclude the process of marking out the full Irish route. Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan TD said the €500,000 was being allocated to Cork County Council.

“This is a Wild Atlantic Way for cyclists,” he said. “It’s
a safe, scenic route specially chosen by experts at the Department of Sport in
conjunction with local authorities, and based on the Eurovelo standard set by
the European Cyclists Federation.

“This is the last piece of the puzzle which will complete
the route in Ireland. The new signage will clearly mark the 475km trail through
county Cork, routing mainly along the coast, using quieter roads, and directing
cyclists away from busier areas.”
