Good news for races, sportives as Covid-19 restriction significantly changes

A further relaxation of restrictions means numbers at events in the Republic have been increased to 200, from 100. Furthermore, even bigger numbers can be accommodated by running staggered races or letting riders off in waves or pods

The domestic cycling scene has received a boost with news that the maximum number of people permitted at an event is now 200, double the previous 100 maximum.

And event organisers can accommodate far more than 200 if they stagger races or start events in waves or pods to ensure no more than 200 participants are together at any one time, in the Republic.

In the North, the Northern Ireland Executive had already
increased the maximum number of people at a sports event to 500, with that
measure in place since May 24th.

Based on the advice of Sport Ireland and the Return to Sport Expert Group, Cycling Ireland has confirmed the increase to 200 people per event in the Republic, which comes into force in time for the re-start of events next week.

Under the timetable for relaxing Covid-19 restrictions across all sectors in the Republic, including sport, events can take place after next Monday, June 7th.

However, Cycling Ireland has advised event organisers to start with 200 for now and has reminded them the maximum 200 figure includes riders and anyone else in attendance at an event.

“Should an event wish to implement waves/pods a
sufficient time gap should be in place to guarantee that at no time would
gatherings of more than 200 people take place,” it has told event organisers
who may, in time, want to accommodate more than 200 people.

“The time gap required will vary between disciplines and
events however event organisers should take a cautious approach with clearly
distinct waves.

“Clear guidance must be issued to participants regarding
their wave start time. Leisure events/sportives should segregate participants
by estimated average speed and set the fastest wave off first.

“A minimum time gap of 15 minutes is recommended. The
time gap will need to increase if there is the risk of a congregation of more
than 200 people before, during or after the event.”

It also says road, track, BMX or off-road races can be
split up with separate races in early or late morning and afternoon events to
avoid a congregation of too many people.
