Eddie Dunbar is line for a possible participation in the end of season Classic Il Lombardia, having been cleared of any fractures following his crash in yesterday’s national road championships.

The Ineos Grenadiers rider was clear with Nicolas Roche and riding strongly when he slid out on a corner with approximately 60 kilometres to go and hit the deck. He continued on for some time but eventually withdrew from the race, expressing concerns with how his shoulder was feeling.

He spoke about those concerns at the finish, firstly to a number of people at the podium presentation and then to stickybottle. Dunbar said that he had damaged his shoulder a number of times in the past and was going to have x-rays and other checks done in order to determine if anything serious had occurred in the fall. He was hoping to get a green light as he has importance races coming up.

“I have Tre Valli Varesine on Tuesday, Milano-Torino on Wednesday and Lombardia, supposedly, on Saturday. So it would be nice to do that. But a lot of guys want to do a Monument, so crashing the week before isn’t necessarily the best thing. We will see.”

Fortunately Dunbar told stickybottle today that his concerns have been eased. “All X-rays and scans were clear thankfully. I should get a few races done Italy this week.”

Dan Martin (Israel Cycling Academy) is also scheduled to do the Italian end of season races, bringing his career to an end. Today’s news means that Ireland will have two riders in those events, raising hopes of a strong showing as the 2021 season draws to a close.

We’ll have a longer piece with Dunbar later.
